This is the second semester that Ed Jenkins's BA 322 class has done a live webinar using Breeze. Groups of 4-5 students worked on presentations using The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. They created PowerPoints and scripts which were used like a teleprompter during the webinar.
Several students self-selected to be the tech experts for each group. These students operated the cameras/mics, teleprompter, and advanced the PowerPoints during the presentations. They also were responsible for recording the event for their group.
We had four workshop sessions with the students - The first to familiarize them with the Breeze interface (Each group received a practice site for their use during the semester). The second session was really to give them a taste of the process - the technical people worked through the process, and we used last year's presentations and scripts to give the presenters a chance to try out pacing, using the mics, transitions, etc.
The third session was a dress rehearsal and to iron out the kinks - like transitions between groups, sound checks with the audience, and how each grup wanted to answer questions.
The final session was the live broadcast which was fairly exciting! All went well, and I believe the students felt as if they had really accomplished something.
Loren Brewster, our Director of IT gave us a great classroom set-up - We used a rolling cart with a pc connected to the Internet via the classroom podium. To that pc, we connected the following:
- Panasonic videocamera on small tripod (we did not use the camera to record - only to broadcast. We used Breeze to record - no post production or storage issues) connected via firewire
- Logitech USB microphone taped to a mic stand
One other pc was set up so students could monitor the "far" view and answer questions that were typed in during the webinars.
